I have used a GoogleReader RSS feed on my iGoogle page since summer. I've tried a few other sites, but having this one as part of my homepage seems to make it easier to manage. I try to scan it about once a week - have a few that I read first and some others that can wait until later.
I added the Minitex Digital Reference RSS feed. I learned that I can change the order of the feeds in the list so I moved the ones of most interest to me toward the top. I almost always read Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog first and then Stephen's Lighthouse by Stephen Abram.I learned that if I am reading a blog and it has an RSS feed that the RSS icon appears at the end of the address box and I can just click that icon to add it to GoogleReader or Google Homepage. I have not worked much with shared items or emailing posts. I can see that active bloggers use a reader to scan the news and blogs of others and then share items of interest within their blog.
I find that an RSS reader is a great way to scan a lot of content. Students could use RSS feeds to follow a news story, the writings of a columnist, updates to a team blog.
